Context

Saxony-Anhalt is currently governed by a "Germany coalition" of the CDU (EPP), SPD (S&D) and FDP (RE) under regional prime minister Sven Schulze, who took over from the retiring Reiner Haseloff in January 2026. The coalition holds a comfortable majority in the outgoing regional parliament, but polling since mid-2025 has shown it losing that majority outright as the CDU (EPP) has fallen and the AfD (ESN) has surged to a large, sustained lead.

The CDU (EPP) is the dominant centre-right force and sits with the European People's Party (EPP). The SPD (S&D) is affiliated with the Party of European Socialists, sitting in the S&D group. The FDP (RE) sits with Renew Europe (RE).

The AfD (ESN), led locally by Ulrich Siegmund, is the clear front-runner in every poll published this year; its MEPs sit with the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group. Die Linke (LEFT), led by Eva von Angern, is affiliated with the Party of the European Left. Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Greens/EFA) sits with the European Green Party / Greens–EFA.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW (NI)) is contesting a Saxony-Anhalt state election for the first time, running dual lead candidates Thomas Schulze and Claudia Wittig; its MEPs have sat as non-inscrits (NI) since the 2024 European election. 15 parties in total were approved for the ballot, including Volt (Eurofederalist), FW (RE) and two animal-rights lists — see the full results table below.
